What to Check on a Used Dozer
- Undercarriage. On a dozer it’s usually the biggest number in the deal. Measure or eyeball rails, pins, bushings, rollers, idlers and sprockets, and get a percentage.
- Steering. Hydrostatic or clutch-and-brake, it should turn crisply both ways under load without hesitating or creeping.
- Blade and push arms. Look for cracks on the C-frame or push arms and wear at the trunnions. The tilt and angle cylinders should hold.
- Ripper. If it has one, check the shank, frame and pin bores for cracks and wear.
- Final drives. Look for leaks at the seals and listen for grinding while it travels.
- Blow-by and smoke. Pull the oil cap with the engine running. Heavy blow-by on a dozer is often the first sign of a tired engine.
Used Dozer Questions
What’s the difference between LGP and XL dozers?
LGP (low ground pressure) dozers have wider pads and longer tracks so they float on soft ground and wetlands. XL dozers have longer tracks for stability and fine grading, with standard-width pads. Standard models are the most compact and maneuverable.
Is a 6-way blade worth it?
For finish grading and spreading material, yes. A 6-way (PAT) blade angles, tilts and lifts from the seat. Straight and semi-U blades are better for pushing big volumes of dirt.
Can you ship a dozer out of state or overseas?
Yes. We load onto your trailer here or help arrange a hauler anywhere in the continental U.S. For export, we can coordinate getting the dozer to the Port of Virginia.
Looking for a Specific Dozer?
Tell Ryan the size, the make you prefer and your budget. If we don’t have the right dozer today, there’s a good chance one is on the way in, and you’ll hear about it before it’s listed.
