What to Check on a Used Excavator
- Undercarriage. Rollers, idlers, sprockets, pins and bushings. On most excavators it’s the single most expensive wear item, so get a percentage before you talk price.
- Swing bearing and swing drive. With the bucket raised, rock it side to side. A clunk or visible play means bearing wear. Swing should be smooth both ways.
- Boom, stick and pins. Look for cracks and old weld repairs around the boom foot and stick nose, and play in the bucket linkage.
- Hydraulic pumps. Start it cold, then work all functions together. A machine that gets slower as it warms up may have a tired pump.
- Final drives and travel. Check the drive motors for leaks and make sure it tracks straight forward and back.
- Auxiliary hydraulics. If you plan to run a hammer or thumb, confirm the plumbing and flow are there before you buy.
Used Excavator Questions
What size excavator do I need?
For residential site work and utility trenching, a 13 to 15 ton machine covers most jobs and is easier to haul. Twenty to 25 tons is the all-round size for commercial site work. Thirty tons and up is for mass excavation, large pipe and loading trucks all day.
Do your excavators come with a thumb or quick coupler?
Some do. Anything that comes on the machine, including buckets, thumbs and couplers, is listed in its description. We don’t sell attachments on their own.
What does LC mean on an excavator?
LC stands for long carriage. The undercarriage is longer than standard, which makes the machine more stable when lifting and digging over the side. Most excavators sold in the U.S. are LC models.
Looking for a Specific Excavator?
Tell Ryan the size, the make you prefer and your budget. If we don’t have the right excavator today, there’s a good chance one is on the way in, and you’ll hear about it before it’s listed.
